Pontiac Fever, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatments
What is Pontiac Fever?
Pontiac fever is a benign form of legionellosis or Legionnaire’s disease. Unlike the latter, it does not progress to pneumonia and does not endanger the patient's life. It is caused by the same family of bacteria: Legionella. Its incubation period is one or two days. The infection is mild and spontaneously resolves within 2 to 5 days without treatment.
The risks of contracting legionellosis rather than its benign form are still poorly established. They would depend on three factors:
- The virulence of the responsible bacterium,
- The duration of exposure at the contamination point,
- The individual’s immune status and the presence or absence of aggravating factors (smoking, diabetes, respiratory disease, etc.)
Where Does Its Name Come From?
Pontiac fever was first diagnosed in 1968 in the United States, in Pontiac, a small industrial town in Michigan, which gave it its name. The affected individuals all had in common working or visiting the town's health center. It wasn't until 1976, when Legionnaire’s disease was discovered, that health authorities were able to link the two illnesses and identify Legionella as the responsible bacteria.
How Is the Disease Contracted?
The infection occurs through the inhalation of aerosols of contaminated water. These are invisible microdroplets infested with Legionella. Naturally present in the environment, these bacteria develop particularly quickly in water temperatures between 25 and 45°C (77 to 113°F). Artificial water systems are therefore the main source of contamination.

They are found in hot water systems (water heaters, faucets, showers, etc.); building air conditioning systems (individual homes, offices, hotels); cooling towers (CT) of factories; spas, jacuzzis; public and decorative fountains; misting systems; atmospheric humidifiers; thermal stations; wastewater treatment plants; and certain medical devices intended for treating sleep apnea or dental care.
Pontiac fever is not contagious.
What Are the Symptoms?
Pontiac fever manifests with flu-like symptoms such as intense fatigue (asthenia), nausea, headaches, high fever, dry cough, and muscle pains called myalgias.
In some cases, chest pain, breathing difficulties (or dyspnea), digestive disturbances like diarrhea and vomiting, or eye redness accompanied by photophobia may be observed.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Due to its benign and spontaneously resolving nature, the condition is rarely diagnosed. The risk of contamination is therefore very likely underestimated.
A microbiological examination is, however, useful. It allows distinguishing Pontiac fever from the flu and precisely identifying the responsible bacterium. Several procedures exist for this: urine tests, serological tests, or culturing of pulmonary samples.
How Can It Be Prevented?
As with legionellosis, there is no vaccine or preventive treatment to protect people against Pontiac fever. However, it is possible to reduce the risks of contracting the disease through proper maintenance of potential sources of infection.
A few simple actions may suffice:
- Ensure proper water circulation in the system and avoid any stagnation;
- Perform maintenance adapted to the water quality and type of installation to prevent scaling and system corrosion;
- Control the temperature of the hot water system;
- Conduct frequent self-checks.
