Legionella pneumophila is an ubiquitous bacterium, which means that it has the ability to grow in its natural habitat (hot water) and adapt to other environments with similar characteristics such as the human body. The latter has an ideal temperature for the growth of this pathogenic bacterium. If inhaled, Legionella pneumophila can make its way into the lungs to replicate until causing a potentially life-threatening infection: Legionnaires’ disease.

A simplified protocol for Legionella testing

The cheapest and most reliable testing method on the market! Capable of counting L. pneumophila concentration in 48 hours. 

  • Perfectly harmless for the microorganisms, Diamidex’s patented molecules have been especially designed for being metabolized only by the targeted microorganisms.
  • Once absorbed, those molecules make the bacteria skins cover themselves with chemical hooks. Onto those hooks can then be plugged chemical objects, such as coloured, luminescent or fluorescent particles that can be seen at a very low concentration.
  • Bacteria covered with those particles can become visible much faster than with the traditional method.

  • Legionella pneumophila bacteria are naturally present in water and wet soil. However, they are particularly found in artificial water networks: water distribution networks (domestic hot water) and cooling circuits (air cooling towers, collective air conditioning).

  • Certain conditions favour their proliferation: a temperature between 25°C and 45°C, the presence of oxygen, corrosion (metal ions: iron, zinc, aluminium), scale (calcium), and a biofilm (an organic deposit layer containing microorganisms and nutrients on which Legionella feed).

  • Therefore, all water systems with these characteristics present a risk.

  • Human infection is caused by inhalation of contaminated water. Thus, the sanitary risk zone depends on the potential propagation of microdroplets (also named aerosols) : a few meters to several tens of meters for showers, spas, misting systems, public fountains… up to several kilometers for air cooling towers.
